PATRIOTISM, WAR, AND WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE

$5

with Ann Gass

Calendar Feb 7, 2023 at 10:30 am, runs for 1 week

In February 1917, voting rights activists were jubilant when the Maine legislature approved the state’s first-ever referendum on women’s suffrage. The vote was set for September 10th. But even as Maine suffragists prepared their campaign to convince their men that women deserved the vote, the country was preparing to enter the war in Europe. The wave of patriotism that followed the US joining the war collided with women’s efforts, in Maine and nationally, to secure voting rights for women. It also reversed hard-fought gains in greater equality for women and working people. There are some interesting parallels to events happening today. This engaging talk is accompanied by historical slides. Preregistration is required to receive online zoom link. A minimum of 4 people is needed to run the course.

$37

with Carole Freeman

Calendar Feb 7, 2023 at 5 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Breathe new life into your body. Literally! Every cell in your body is dependent on oxygen to create energy, and the amount of oxygen available to every cell in your body and brain is dependent on the breath. And not only your breath but the quality of your breathing pattern and function. Learn how you and your respiratory system can be more efficient at delivering blood, oxygen, glucose, and nutrients to all of those cells that keep you moving. Whether you’re an athlete or not, the secret to greater strength and endurance starts and ends with the strength of your respiratory system. No matter how long you train or how hard you work out when your breathing gives out - your body follows. Preregistration is required to receive online link.

About Carole: Carole Freeman is a Respiratory Therapist and Breathing Specialist and holds a graduate degree in Health Sciences from Loma Linda University Medical Center. She focuses on the relatively new field of pulmonary medicine in recognizing and treating breathing disorders.
